Group 3 Field Trip Itinerary:

1. Exploratorium- Led by Ralph

Follow me to this point, and get ready for a solar eclipse.

·         As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun.

·         This can happen only at new moon, when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment referred to as syzygy.

·         In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon.

·         In partial and annular eclipses only part of the Sun is obscured.

The orbit of the moon.

  • The orbit of the moon is tilted 5 degrees with respect to the plane of the ecliptic.
  • This means that most months the new moon passes above or below the sun avoiding a solar eclipse.
  • But twice a year when the moons orbit crosses the plane of the ecliptic, there is a possibility of a total solar eclipse.

Lunar Eclipse.

  • Light streams out from every point on the sun.
  • Since the sun is larger than the moon, light from the top of the sun passes over the top of the moon.
  • Light from the entire sun creates a cone of darkness behind the Earth, the shadow or umbra.
  • The light that is bent into this shadow by the atmosphere of the Earth is colored red because the atmosphere scatters out the blue light.
  • Similarly, light from the bottom of the sun passes over the top of the Earth, creating an expanding cone of the penumbra.
  • Inside the penumbra light from part of the sun is blocked.

General Discussion:

  • The group will meet outside of the Tech Museum. The entrance leads to the second floor. The third floor of the museum will be the first destination where we will travel through four interactive exhibits, The Art of the Guitar, Dance Sculptures, Art of Perspective, and Digital images. Tourists will have the opportunity to interact with all exhibits. Next, we will travel downstairs to the first floor. There are tutorials on designing an interactive exhibit, The Introduction to Interactive Exhibit Design and Inside a Great Interactive.

3. Holocaust Museum, Kristallnacht Simulation- Led by Kate

General Discussion:

  • The group will meet outside the holocaust museum. As everyone has arrived, I will provide some information about the US Holocaust Museum, Kristallnacht, and the simulation of Kristallnacht.  I will explain that each clickable artifact will start a recording giving information and open a new experience in the environment. I would like to invite everyone to explore the environment and click on at least two artifacts. After they have clicked on and experienced two artifacts, all participants will be asked to reconvene at the first room of the simulation.

I was thinking before while we are in Collaborate and before we start the tours in SL, I could do a brief introduction as follows:

Welcome everyone to Group 3’s field trip in Second Life. Kate, Marie, Crystal, Ralph and I are excited to take you all on a tour of three learning environments we found most interesting. We will start with exploring the Exploratorium led by Ralph. There you will witness a solar eclipse and much more. Next, Crystal will lead you all through the Tech Museum. Then finally, Kate will take you to the Holocaust Museum. Marie will be the last one leaving each site to ensure that everyone gets to the next place. I will be transcribing and posting the links in Collaborate if anyone gets lost. Now let us begin. Here is the link for our first site.

Is that ok. I felt like we need some introduction before we began visiting our sites. Let me know what you think.
